OWNER’S NOTEBOOK · PREPARATION GUIDE
What to bring to your first conversation with a CPA.
You don’t need every answer. A clear picture of your business and your priorities is a useful place to start.
Begin with your business.
Be ready to describe what your business does, its ownership structure, the systems you use, and the kind of support you are looking for.
Make a short list of priorities.
Are you looking for tax preparation, more consistent records, planning discussions, or a coordinated relationship? Share any upcoming business changes and known deadlines.
Identify the records you have.
Recent returns and financial reports can help an advisor understand the potential scope. Ask the firm how to share documents securely before sending sensitive information.
Discuss how the relationship will work.
Ask about responsibilities, communication, timelines, scope, and fees. An initial conversation should help both sides decide whether the engagement is a fit.
