Section 179 Deductions: How to Write Off a Business Vehicle or Equipment Purchase Instantly

Section 179 can allow a business to deduct eligible asset costs in the year the property is placed in service, subject to business-use, income, dollar, and vehicle limits. It is an accelerated tax deduction—not an instant refund or reimbursement of the purchase price.

The purchase should first make business sense. A deduction reduces the amount subject to tax; it does not make the equipment free.

What are the Section 179 limits for 2026?

For tax years beginning in 2026:

2026 federal Section 179 deduction limits
LimitAmount
Maximum Section 179 deduction$2,560,000
Eligible property cost at which the deduction begins to phase out$4,090,000
Section 179 limit for covered heavy SUVs$32,000

The general deduction limit is reduced dollar for dollar by qualifying property costs above the phaseout threshold. A separate business-income limitation also applies. These figures are annual limits, not amounts available separately for every asset. IRS: Publication 946, 2026 limits

What must happen before year-end?

The asset must be ready and available for its intended business use. A deposit, order, or payment for equipment that is not operational until the following year generally does not establish a current-year placed-in-service date. IRS: Depreciation and Form 4562 instructions

Before buying, document the asset, cost, acquisition terms, planned use, delivery, and installation. This makes the year-end decision easier to evaluate.

Can you deduct the entire cost of a business vehicle?

Not automatically. Business use generally must exceed 50% to qualify for Section 179, and only the business-use portion enters the calculation. Passenger automobiles have separate depreciation restrictions. Covered heavy SUVs have the additional Section 179 cap shown above; some specifically configured commercial vehicles are treated differently.

Weight alone does not establish a full write-off. Verify the vehicle’s classification, business use, and applicable limitations before relying on a dealership’s tax illustration. IRS: Vehicle deduction rules

How does the income limit work?

Section 179 is limited by taxable income from the active conduct of trades or businesses under the applicable rules. Amounts disallowed by that income limit may carry forward. Partnerships, S corporations, and their owners can face limits at more than one level. Internal Revenue Code section 179

How is Section 179 different from bonus depreciation?

They are separate provisions with different qualifications and limitations. Current federal law generally permits 100% bonus depreciation for eligible property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025, subject to the applicable rules. Bonus depreciation does not share Section 179’s business-income limitation, although other loss restrictions can apply. IRS: Additional first-year depreciation guidance, Form 4562 instructions

A CPA should compare the available methods and timing rather than assume the largest first-year deduction produces the best overall result.

What might a deduction actually save?

Assume an eligible $40,000 equipment cost is fully deductible and the relevant marginal income tax rate is 24%. The simplified income-tax reduction would be $9,600—not $40,000. Financing costs, other taxes, deduction interactions, and future years are excluded from this illustration.

The business still needs the cash flow to pay for the asset. Financing and deductibility are different questions.

What records should you keep?

Keep purchase and financing documents, the placed-in-service date, business-use evidence, and the depreciation schedule. For vehicles, preserve mileage records. Reduced business use or a later disposition can create recapture or taxable gain. IRS: Publication 946
