What Is a Tax Extension? Applications for Automatic Extension of Time to File

A tax extension gives an eligible taxpayer additional time to submit a particular return when the required extension procedure is completed properly and on time. It generally extends the filing deadline, rather than the deadline for paying tax.
The correct procedure depends on the return involved. An individual extension and a business extension are not interchangeable.
Individual income-tax extensions: Form 4868
Individuals generally use Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to request an additional six months to file.
The extension runs from the original filing deadline—not from the day you submit the request.
The application requires an estimate of your tax liability and payments already made. The IRS also offers an extension-payment procedure that can eliminate the need to submit a separate Form 4868. Business and certain other extensions: Form 7004
Form 7004 is used to request automatic extensions for specified business income-tax, information, and other returns, including many partnership and corporation returns.
The extension period depends on the return and applicable rules. A separate application generally is required for each return being extended.

“Automatic” does not mean nothing needs to be done
For these applications, “automatic” generally means you do not have to provide a detailed explanation for needing additional time. You must still meet the requirements for a valid, timely request.
Do not assume your return has been extended simply because you have not received it from your preparer.
What an extension does not cover
An extension does not automatically postpone every related obligation. Review tax payments, state filings, estimated payments, and any separate information returns individually.
Special rules may apply to taxpayers abroad, disaster relief, and other circumstances. Confirm the deadline that applies to your situation rather than relying on a general calendar.
